Kornelimünster & the Eifel

Aachen’s picturesque district

Kornelimünster is located in the Inde valley, and is Aachen’s most picturesque district. The historic centre, which surrounds the Medieval priory church, St. Kornelius, has remained almost entirely intact today, and invites visitors to walk around and spend a few hours there.

Historic town centre and the gateway to the Eifel

As well as its wonderful, historic town centre, Kornelimünster is also a good starting point for a large number of expeditions to the surrounding area. Whether you prefer leisurely cycling on the Vennbahn track, mountain bike tours or hiking on the Eifelsteig – here, there’s something for everyone. On the road on the Vennbahn

The Vennbahn is one of the longest disused railway track cycle routes in Europe. Covering 125 kilometres, it runs through the wonderful different Eifel landscapes and right through three countries. With an average ascent of just 2%, the Vennbahn is an ideal cycle route for all ages, from 0 to 99. Historic fair Kornelimünster

Any visit to Kornelimünster is like travelling back in time. However, anyone visiting during the historic fair is certain to be awestruck. Jugglers, travelling salesmen and carousels from imperial times provide a unique experience for all the family. Every year, from the Wednesday before Corpus Christi, the “Historischer Jahrmarkt”, or “historic fair” attracts tens of thousands of visitors over five days, and the entire district becomes a huge open-air museum, with the kind of atmosphere that used to accompany fairs in the past.
