Charles Fountain

Charlemagne watches over Aachen at the Karlsbrunnen.
The oldest fountain in the city, the Karlsbrunnen or Marktbrunnen, has already seen a lot. In 1792 the statue of Charles was kidnapped by the French as spoils of war, but was recovered in 1804. Between 1969 and 2014, the original figure stood in the coronation hall of the Aachen town hall. With the opening of the Center Charlemagne - New City Museum Aachen, the real Karl has found a new home here. Since then, a replica of Charlemagne has stood in the six-ton bronze bowl. Due to its appearance, the bronze fountain bowl is also lovingly referred to by the people of Aachen as Eäzekomp (German: pea bowl).
