The amusing plot begins in front of a tavern where Gretchen works as a barmaid.
Here the merchant Fortuna meets Schängche, Nieres and Veries. He tries to sell the three of them a lottery ticket. After some back and forth, the three friends purchase the ticket, which bears the number 7777. The lot is paid for together. The innkeeper soon comes with a surprise: the ticket with the four sevens has won. Kidneys, Veries and Schänchen are now rich.
Schängchen, who has opened a tailor's salon in Berlin, does not notice how he is being deceived and cheated by his customers. The Barons von Windheim and Zwillinginsky as well as the artists Camilla and Laura in particular flatter him, but are only after his money...
