Photo art in exile

1928 - 1949
Europe was shaped by numerous crises and drastic political events at the beginning of the 20th century. Hunger, war and political persecution force many people to leave their homeland and go into exile.
In the 1930s, a large number of photographers emigrated to London, Paris or the USA from the political conditions. The exhibition combines ten artists who continued to work in exile and the medium of photography in the country in which they fled. Selected press and reports as well as artistic photographs present different strategies to adapt to the new environment.
The approximately 170 recordings demonstrate how photographers in exile continue to pursue their passion. They can be read against the background of the current world events, but also as a warning contemporary witnesses that stimulate reflection.
