Exhibition in the Suermondt Ludwig Museum

Michael Triegel (*1968, Erfurt) is one of the most important contemporary artists. Trained in the immediate vicinity of the new Leipzig school, he finds his role models in the Italian Renaissance and mannerism, the Spanish Baroque and the Flemish masters of the late Middle Ages. His works are between tradition and modernity: with confident sovereignty, the artist adapts traditional image formulas and subjects, the compilation of which is targeted and raises questions, the answer of which he leaves the viewer.
In 2010 he received international attention with the mandate of the diocese of Regensburg, a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI. To paint and recently with the completion of a cranach altar in the Naumburg cathedral choir.
The Aachen exhibition presents Triegel's variety of expression in its entire range: from large -format works from the 90s to his latest work, "young man from Procida" (2025), combined medieval image tradition, lived practice and contemporary portrait.
A catalog at Hirmer Verlag appears accompanying.
