Summer enjoyment in the shade of Aachen's oases

Sun on the skin, feeling warmth, a subtle feeling of not being blinded by the sun, a little shade,  fresh air of lush greenery . A paradisiacal idea beyond a hot day in the middle of the city, loud traffic and unpleasant smells. Surreal? Not at all. My beautiful Aachen offers many facets of “shady oases” to enjoy the summer days .

I suggest we listen to the beautifully melodic summer classic “Summer in the city” but indulge in one or two oasis. “Hot town, summer in the city, Back of my neck gettin′ dirt and gritty, Been down, isn't it a pity?” – let's escape...

Monheimsallee spa park – Güldenplan cemetery

Lovers of quiet and somewhat  mystical places will find a special form of peace and relaxation . on the edge of the Monheimsallee spa park . As the first Protestant cemetery in Aachen, it has beautiful, monumental gravestones with interesting inscriptions , an ancient tree population, meadows, and shade. There is no grave atmosphere, because the flora and fauna of the spa park in all its facets - fountains with large fountains, small bridges, rose gardens... - exude immense vitality. And yet, at the site of the cemetery, I am always surrounded by a special sense of calm. Perhaps it is the positive energy of life that can also be felt here when you surrender to the stories that can be read from the gravestones.

Van Halbern Park

If you love peace and space, head to the south-west of the city towards Belgium. The  Van Halfern Park merges into the Aachen city forest and therefore offers limitless variety and relaxation . I really love this park, which was once designed in the style of an English landscape garden . Trees from different continents that are up to 200 years old tell such wonderful stories and take me on a botanical journey . Let your soul unwind and feel the energy of the trees. Mossy grottoes, temples, stairs and figures are reminiscent of the idea of the Aachen cloth manufacturer Gustav van Halfern . He planned a weekend retreat for his family, his son refined the idea and had a park created in the style of an English country garden.

Old columns, an elegantly outstanding pavilion, meadows, ancient trees and a treading pool are the fragments of a small world that I highly recommend if you a kind of creative break . The special aura of the “Aachen Acropolis” , which a relic of the Belvedere social house , attracts creativity and happiness. Reading, picnicking, refreshing your feet . Just beautiful.

Kaiser Friedrich Park, also called Hangeweiher

Once created as a public park, the  Kaiser Friedrich Park a number of attractions such as pedal boating on the hillside pond, an outdoor swimming pool and playgrounds . But that's not what's so attractive and beautiful about this park for me. On warm days I'm always drawn to a slightly elevated place above the pond: the water cascade of the Pau stream . Here the small stream flows into the hillside pond. The rippling water, the high oxygen content, higher humidity and the old trees create a beautiful form of relaxation for me within just a few minutes. It's mostly empty here; Sometimes curious children explore the stream and happy children's laughter is contagious.

Witch Forest

About three kilometers south of the district,
the Witches' Forest invites you to cool off, hike and relax . The hornbeams that were once planted on the former border wall between Kronenberg and Preuswald, towards the Netherlands, have grown into gnarled tree figures . A bizarre natural setting. Walk, maybe climb a little, touch trees, look at them, relax. My personal tip: The  walk along Gut Hasselholz is already a beautiful path and a short break at the farm with a farm shop and a snack/drinks vending machine is perfect.
