Grass House
Grashaus Aachen: From the First City Hall to a Center for European History
As one of Aachen’s oldest buildings, the Grashaus on Fischmarkt has symbolized the city’s early self-governance since the 13th century. Originally built around 1260, it served as the city’s first town hall and reflected the citizens’ growing sense of responsibility. Later, it was used as a dungeon and then, for many decades, as the city archives. Today, the Grashaus is a place that explores European themes and connects history with the present. Upon entering, you can sense how its varied uses have shaped the character of the building, which, despite all the changes, retains a quiet sense of continuity.
