The Johannisbach has been a part of Aachen since ancient times. It once flowed openly through the city, shaping a marshy lowland where monasteries were the first to settle. Later, simple workers’ houses were built there, and at times there was even a slaughterhouse. Between 1875 and 1908, the stream was buried underground to improve sanitary conditions. In some places, it reemerges today, such as around Lindenplatz, where the visible water brings tranquility to the urban space and the significance of natural elements becomes palpable. If you follow its course, the path eventually opens up into the Wurm Valley, which connects serene nature with Aachen’s history.
