Katschhof
Katschhof, Aachen – A historic square between the cathedral and City Hall
Located between Aachen Cathedral and City Hall, Katschhof is a spacious square where many layers of the city’s history intersect. Its name recalls the pillory that once stood here in the Middle Ages. Today, as you walk across this expansive square, you can sense the unique tension between the Carolingian Palatine Chapel and City Hall, which was built on the foundation walls of the Royal Hall. Archaeological finds reveal how Aachen evolved from a Roman settlement into Charlemagne’s imperial palace. The square invites you to discover the shifting perspectives that arise from the proximity of these two iconic structures.
