Ponttor
Ponttor Aachen – a stone monument to the medieval city guard
The Ponttor is one of Aachen’s few surviving city gates and takes you right back to the era of the Imperial City. Completed around 1320, it protected the northern entrance to the city and was part of a comprehensive defensive system that included a gatehouse, a barbican, and a moat. The massive construction, featuring a portcullis, a pitch-covered parapet, and towers, impressively demonstrates how seriously the city took its defense. Standing before the gate, you can see traces of the Middle Ages in every stone. Today, the Ponttor stands as a silent threshold between the past and the present, telling of times when travelers and merchants took their first steps into the city here.
