Varnenum: A Quiet Place in the Roman Religious World
On the Schildchen plateau near Kornelimünster lies Varnenum, a Gallo-Roman temple complex dating back to the turn of the era. The remains of the three temples appear modest today, but in ancient times this was an important sanctuary that blended Roman and local traditions. Only the basic outlines of the temple complex are visible today, which makes the site seem all the more peaceful. As you walk across the open space, the landscape blends with history. The silence invites you to let your thoughts wander and imagine how people from the region once gathered here to honor their gods.
