2044. chronicle of the future
Social Fiction by Gernot Grünewald & Ensemble
Aachen in the year 2044. After the National Alliance for Germany (NAfD) became the strongest party in the 2029 federal elections, democracy has been abolished bit by bit and an authoritarian regime has been established. Freedom of expression no longer exists, artistic production is under state control, "expatriations" of people who cannot provide German "proof of ancestry" take place on a daily basis and digital surveillance is omnipresent.
Inspired by the podcast "2044. Chronicle of a lost future" by Norman Schäfer, the director and ensemble are developing a new play that looks at our present from the future and uses a group of people to examine how action is possible in an authoritarian state and how we can prevent this future scenario. A teacher, a policeman, a reporter, a deportation prisoner on the run, an artist in resistance and a scientist from the RWTH in Aachen experience a world that has come apart at the seams.
