Physicality, Feminism, and Media Reflection

With “Body Matters: Physicality in 1970s Video Art,” the Ludwig Forum Aachen turns its attention to a period of artistic innovation. At that time, video became a testing ground for exploring questions of identity, perception, and the political significance of the body. The exhibition brings together ten seminal works from the museum’s video archive, including pieces by Marina Abramović and Ulay, Bruce Nauman, Joan Jonas, and Ulrike Rosenbach. Gestures, movements, and the body itself become the medium of artistic exploration here. Feminist perspectives and the social upheavals of the era are just as present as the playful engagement with space, technology, and self-observation. The exhibition brings to life just how closely art, the body, and politics were intertwined in the 1970s.
