Fountain Tour: Where Water Splashes
Aachen, the city of water!
Aachen, the City of Water! Immerse yourself in the fascinating water culture of this imperial city and marvel at the stories hidden behind the splashing water. Leave the cathedral and city hall behind on this guided tour and set out through the Old Town to follow the trail of “blue gold.” Learn why so many fountains shape the cityscape and how almost all of them—from the Karlsbrunnen to the Türelürelüßje and the Mariensäule—are fed by water from the Paubach. Every fountain tells its own story, sometimes, of course, including myths and legends. On this tour, discover the tricks the people of Aachen used to save their fountains during the war, and find out why Charlemagne stands on a “bowl of peas” at the market, why the Doll Fountain invites more than just play, and how Aachen, of all places, became a renowned spa town in the 17th century.
