A Musical Birthday Celebration at the Cathedral
From Vivaldi to the Present Day
The Aachen Cathedral Girls’ Choir will celebrate its 15th anniversary on the last weekend in May with a special birthday program.
The festivities kick off on Saturday at 7 p.m. with an anniversary concert at Aachen Cathedral. The program features Baroque music by Antonio Vivaldi: Kyrie and Gloria in an arrangement for women’s choir—a work that has never before been heard in this form at Aachen Cathedral. The choir will be accompanied by the cathedral brass ensemble and two soloists. Choir director Marco Fühner is particularly taken with the powerful passages: “It really gets going,” he enthuses about the “rich Baroque music.” In contrast is “Song of the Universe” by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, which is currently being performed frequently around the world. The work combines rhythmic elements with an impressive sonority and is one of the modern highlights of the program.
A musical service followed by a family day on Sunday at 10 a.m. will bring the anniversary celebrations to a close.
