Burtscheid in Aachen: Hot springs, history, and urban charm
Burtscheid has a long history dating back to the Celts and Romans, and it was first mentioned in historical records in 1018. The warm thermal springs shaped life in the neighborhood and quickly established the town as a center for healing. Later, a Benedictine monastery was founded here, which influenced Burtscheid’s development for centuries. Even today, you can sense a unique blend of tranquility, urban vibrancy, and architectural remnants from various eras. Amid Baroque buildings, narrow streets, and the familiar murmur of the Wurmbach stream, Burtscheid feels like a neighborhood that has preserved its own character while remaining open to modern Aachen.
