Along the Route Charlemagne
Discover Aachen in the footsteps of Charlemagne!
What would Charlemagne think if he were to walk through Aachen today? Follow in the footsteps of the great emperor and discover the significance of this city—where history and modernity blend harmoniously—within the European context! On this walking tour, our guides will take you to eight stops that bear witness to Aachen’s development as a European city and highlight various key themes and their importance to Emperor Charlemagne, Aachen, and Europe. At the Elisenbrunnen, we’ll delve into “bathing culture” and learn about the healing properties of the thermal water. While you’ll learn more about “history” at the Centre Charlemagne, the “Religion” stop—namely the cathedral, which, by the way, is Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site—reflects Aachen’s spiritual significance. The Grashaus sheds light on the theme of “Europe,” while the City Hall, as the “Power” station, highlights Aachen’s role as an imperial residence. Finally, the Couven Museum, housed in a magnificent 18th-century townhouse, represents the regional “way of life,” while the modern SuperC represents “science.” The International Newspaper Museum, meanwhile, illustrates how the development of “media” changed the world and the impact this had on Aachen.
