The "Game of Kings" becomes the "Game of Horses" as part of the "Aachen World Championships Special" program surrounding the 2026 World Equestrian Games!

The city’s marketing department is setting up an oversized chess game on Katschhof, bringing a touch of equestrian flair to the city even before the competitions begin. Flowing capes, imposing rooks, billowing manes, sturdy overalls, wide-brimmed hats, and jagged crowns: All the pieces—from pawns to kings—are friendly horse characters, designed and crafted with great attention to detail. The “chess pieces,” ranging from 85 to 140 centimeters in size and adorned in gold and purple, invite young and old alike to play chess in the shadow of the cathedral. Anyone who doesn’t know the rules yet—or has forgotten them—will find them clearly explained right next to the 18-by-18-meter playing area.
You can find more informationhere.

The pieces, designed by the Aachen-based agency “yella park – Studio für visuelle Kommunikation,” are also available for purchase. This is a limited edition.
