Church of the Holy Cross
Holy Cross Church in Aachen: A historicist basilica in the Pontviertel district
The Church of the Holy Cross is located in the lively Pontviertel neighborhood and invites you into a space that has retained its historic character despite a turbulent history. The cruciform basilica was consecrated in 1902 and built according to plans by Josef Buchkremer. Its compact floor plan was dictated by the limited building site, which continues to give it a distinctive presence to this day. When you step inside, you’ll find a church interior that is one of the few in Aachen still largely preserved in its original historicist style. This interplay of simple form and atmospheric depth makes the church a place where you can find peace and discover architectural details that reflect a piece of Aachen’s city history.
