Saint Stephen in Aachen: A Bronze Statue and Pilgrimage Tradition at the Hungarian Chapel

The bronze statue of Saint Stephen stands quietly in front of the Hungarian Chapel, bearing witness to a long tradition of pilgrimage. The statue was created in 1993 by Imre Varga and presented as a gift to Hungarian pilgrim groups. It commemorates the pilgrimage that has drawn people from many regions to Aachen since the Middle Ages and still takes place every seven years. If you linger here, you can sense some of the devotion that has shaped this place over the centuries. The sculpture appears simple yet powerful, as if waiting for the next visitors to make their way through history.
