Night of Broken Glass
Kristallnacht – A Commemoration of the Persecution of Jews in Aachen
The Nazi era was a nightmare, especially for Jews. One of the defining events of that period was Kristallnacht, which took place from November 8 to 9, 1938. On that night, the Aachen synagogue, among other sites, was desecrated and destroyed by arson carried out by the Nazis. 1,106 glass panels, each 19 millimeters thick and shaped into a Star of David, still serve as a reminder of Kristallnacht today. Like the star, the new synagogue and Judaism are meant to stand indestructible into the future.
