Nelson Mandela Park: A green retreat steeped in history
Nelson Mandela Park is located west of downtown Aachen and combines a nature experience with a piece of the city’s history. The site was once the private garden of the von Halfern family and later became part of the old hospital. As you stroll through the park, you can still see how differently the various areas have developed over time. Giant old trees create an almost enchanted atmosphere, while open meadows offer a space for tranquility. Since 2017, the park has borne the name of the South African Nobel Peace Prize laureate, commemorating the long-standing city partnership between Aachen and Cape Town. In this blend of memorial site and natural space, the park fosters an atmosphere where the past and relaxation complement one another.
