St. Michael
St. Michael: a parish church with deep roots in the Burtscheider neighborhood
St. Michael is one of the oldest parish churches in Burtscheid. It was first mentioned as early as 1252 and served as the parish church of the former imperial abbey. It took on its current form around 1751, at the same time as the neighboring abbey church of St. John the Baptist. The building’s clean lines lend the interior a serene, almost ethereal atmosphere. Upon entering, you sense the transition from the lively Michaelsbergstraße into a space that preserves history and faith. Many traces tell of life in Burtscheid in days gone by and the proximity to the abbey, whose influence is evident in the church tithe and the integration into the monastic structure. St. Michael is a place where the historical depth of the neighborhood is particularly striking.
