Stone Cartridge Kornelimünster: Historical Figures Carved from Nivelstein Sandstone

In front of St. Cornelius’s Provost Church, you’ll encounter the Stone Patrons, two figures carved from Nivelstein sandstone that have watched over the historic entrance to the church for centuries. Cornelius, with his characteristic horn, and Cyprian at his side, serve as a reminder of the monastery’s patron saints and highlight the long-standing religious significance of this place. The sandstone used was already prized in Roman times and gives the sculptures a special connection to the region’s history. As you approach, you’ll sense the quiet presence of the figures, who have become familiar companions over generations.
