RWTH Aachen University Hospital: High-Tech Architecture for Medicine, Research, and Education
The RWTH Aachen University Hospital stands out from a distance thanks to its distinctive architecture. Construction of the monumental complex began in the early 1970s based on plans by architects Weber and Brand, and it was officially inaugurated in 1985. The structure is reminiscent of industrial facilities, as this was the first time high-tech architecture was applied to hospital construction. With several thousand rooms and clearly structured levels, it creates a space that unites medical care, research, and teaching under one roof. The building’s scale appears both powerful and functional. As you approach the structure, you can sense how it translates the concept of modern medicine into a physical form, thereby becoming a striking feature of Aachen’s cityscape.
