Aachen Weather Column: a colorful weather display above the main train station
The Aachen Weather Column is one of the city’s modern landmarks, combining technical sophistication with a touch of nostalgia. Since the 1950s, it has used colored neon tubes to display the weather forecast for the coming day. The eleven-meter-tall structure was modeled after a New York design and later mounted on an administrative building, bringing its total height to over forty meters. After dark, the column reveals its special charm when the sphere and shaft glow in different colors, offering a silent weather forecast over the city. The weather column is not only an eye-catcher but also an example of Aachen’s enthusiasm for unusual technical ideas.
