Plaster casts tell the story of Aachen's art history

Starting October 16, the Aachen Cathedral Treasury will shine a spotlight on a material that usually remains hidden: plaster. The special exhibition presents around 20 casts of significant Aachen goldsmith works and shows how reproductions have contributed to the study, documentation, and dissemination of art over the centuries. Complemented by photographs, a 3D print, and other reproduction media, the exhibition offers fascinating insights into the history of “copied art.” It becomes clear that plaster casts are far more than mere replicas. They preserve historical conditions, reveal changes over time, and tell their own unique story.
