Aachen Cathedral
Burial place, coronation church and place of pilgrimage - Aachen Cathedral
The history of today's Aachen Cathedral began around 803 AD with the Church of St. Mary. As the burial place of Charlemagne, the coronation church of the Roman-German kings and a pilgrimage church, the cathedral is a true place of pilgrimage. As Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is visited by more than 1 million worshippers and tourists every year, either privately or on a guided tour. Every seven years, Christians from all over the world flock to Aachen for the Shrine Tour to take a look at the four great shrines venerated there.
To the right of the main entrance is a model of Aachen Cathedral, which is intended to help blind people in particular to feel the extensive building structure.
It is not possible to visit the cathedral as a tourist during church services. Short-term closures due to church events are possible.
The cathedral is accessible with restrictions.
