Aachen City Hall – History You Can Feel in Every Stone

In the heart of the Old Town stands Aachen City Hall, a building that impressively embodies the city’s long history. Built in the 14th century on the foundations of the Carolingian Aula Regia, this Gothic structure reflected the growing pride of Aachen’s citizens. Inside, the Coronation Hall recalls the era when the coronation ceremonies of the Holy Roman Emperors were held here. Portraits such as that of Charlemagne highlight Aachen’s significance as a center of power in centuries past. Despite severe damage during World War II, the town hall returned to its present form after reconstruction. As you walk through the halls, you can feel the connection between medieval architecture and vibrant urban culture, which continues to find expression here to this day.

The town hall is located in the middle of the old town. The main train station is approx. 15 minutes' walk away.

Barrier-free access is provided by an elevator. To use the elevator, please contact the staff via the door intercom (to the right of the staircase) at the Marienturm.
