Karlshof Fountain, Aachen – A Hidden Courtyard Fountain Evoking Aachen’s Octagon

The Karlshof Fountain lies somewhat hidden behind the Marktapotheke and serves as a small oasis of calm in the heart of the Old Town. Its octagonal layout is reminiscent of the octagon in Aachen Cathedral and highlights the city’s cultural significance. Ottmar Hollmann designed the fountain in 1969 using marble, concrete, and bronze. Reliefs on its sides depict the seven liberal arts, which played a special role during the time of Charlemagne. Especially in the summer, when the courtyard comes alive, the fountain serves as a tranquil counterpoint to the market square and invites visitors to linger for a moment in the shadow of history.
